Team Synopsis, by Gantry
Though I have only played a few games with the Dodgers, I've seen enough to know they suck. They have some serious holes in the lineup and what could possibly be the worst bench in either version of RBI. Pitching is decent and hitting sucks. That is a real bad combo for straight pitch...
Pitching
The Dodgers staff is the lone bright spot for the team. Koufax is a very good straight pitch player and they have a good mix of lefties and righties. Also, since all 4 pitchers are real-life starters, they have some great endurance. Stick with Koufax (probably the best pitcher against the Yankees) and follow up with Drysdale. Fernando can get the lefties out...
The Lineup
- Chili Willie Davis sucks and you have to bring in Maury Wills. He has terrific speed and you should use it to the fullest. Go for the Pettis and, if you get on, run around the bases. He has no redeemable features outside of speed, so hit the slapper and take the cheap way out...
- Pee Wee Reese doesn't have much going for him, so it's time to bring in the only good bench player on LA - Davey Lopes. He has some pop and quite a bit of speed, especially when following up Wills. By some miracle he hit 28 homers one year, so take advantage and swing away...
- Jackie Robinson is Keith Hernandez with speed. Good, but certainly not great at the three spot. Might get you a dinger or two, but righties with little power are a serious liability in straight pitch. Once again, the butt-awful bench of LA comes back to haunt you...
- This might be a terrible bias because I'm fresh off an 0-12 streak with him (literally), but Duke Snider reeks of Geena Davis on the NES. Big numbers but hits like Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister. Popups everywhere and they rarely leave the park. One of the worst cleanup hitters in the game...
- Campy can hit, that's for sure. This is what Duke Snider should be, but we'll take it here. He runs the bases like he would after the car accident, but you should be hitting homers anyway....
- Pedro Guerrero is the best hitter on the team. Hits like a powerful righty should, homers and singles. I think his Dodger days we pre-coke, which would explain the production. Keep the riff-raff out of the dugout and he'll do just fine...
- The Steve Garvey show sucks big time. Not enough power and has a terrible habit of grounding out to the pitcher. Roger Maris has a weaker version of this habit, but at least he goes yard a few times a game. And if you didn't get the theme yet, you're stuck with him because of the LA bench...
- Ron Cey has a glove, I'll give him that. Like another ex-Cub 3rd baseman (Ron Santo), his RBI stats are very misleading. Very inconsistent with the power and grounds out way too fucking much. I'm done bitching about the bench, so live with him...
The Rest
- Steve Sax is a righty with no power. Has the worthless right-handed speed and may eek out a pinch hit, but don't expect a dinger. I'd rate him somewhere between Rick Burleson and Steve Lake...
- Manny Mota, are you fucking kidding me? This is supposed to be a mix of the greatest Dodger players of all-time, and they give us a lifetime pinch hitter. The Yanks get Maris and the Dodgers get Mota, brutal. I'd rate him somewhere between Steve Sax and Steve Lake. I shouldn't have to tell you what that means...
